Israeli Music Today – Episode #29: Shalva Band, Netta Barzilai, Harel Ska’at

Israeli Music Today, Episode #29: May 6, 2019

Israeli Music Today: Transcript

Today in Israeli Music, the Shalva Band releases their first original song…Netta Barzilai will release her own new song at the Eurovision… and Harel Skaat makes a big announcement. This is MyIsraeliMusic.com, where we’re building a stronger Israel, one song at a time. I’m Josh Shron, and here’s your Israeli music news for Monday, May 6, 2019.

The Shalva Band releases its first original song

Just days before their big Eurovision performance, the Shalva Band released their first original song. The song is called “HaDelet Tihiyeh P’tucha” – the door will be open – a fitting title for the group of musicians with disabilities which has shown the world how doors can be open to everyone. Here’s a sample.

The new song is accompanied by a web site: open-door.co.il. Before visitors can watch the new music video, they’re asked to agree to the following statement: “I support the integration of children with disabilities in all aspects of life, and believe that every child has a place, because integration is success for all of us.” When you agree to the statement, the music video pops right up. If anyone can cause real change in our society, the members of the Shalva Band are the ones to make it happen.

Netta Barzilai to debut new song at the Eurovision

We’ve known for a few weeks that Netta Barzilai would debut a new song at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, and now we know the title. Coming off the success of her hit “Bassa Sababa“, her new song will be called, and I’m pretty sure this is NOT a joke, “Nana Banana”. But we won’t have to wait until the Eurovision finale on May 18th to hear it. Netta will release the song on YouTube on May 10th, almost a year to the day that she won the Eurovision in 2018. Bassa Sababa, meanwhile, is sitting pretty on the US Billboard Dance Club Hits at #12, though it was as high as #4 at one point. As for the new song? We know very little, but we can be fairly sure that it will be as “interesting” as her previous hits.

Harel Skaat will leave the judges’ table at “The Next Star”

And finally, Harel Ska’at announced yesterday that he will not return as a judge on “HaKochav Haba” next season. Ska’at has been with the reality show since it started five years ago. He made the announcement on Instagram: “I wanted to tell you that after five seasons on ‘HaKochav Haba L’Erevision’, I’ve decided not to continue to the next season. I want to thank Teddy Productions, my friends at the table, to Assi and Rotem and all my friends at Keshet for an amazingly fun period. I learned and experienced so much and truly enjoyed being on the best show on television with amazing people who gave with all their hearts. Because of you, we brought the Eurovision home.”

Harel Skaat leaves behind fellow judges Assaf Amdursky, Keren Peles, Shiri Maimon, and Static and Ben-El Tavori. No word yet on whether someone new will replace him.
