Israeli Music Today, Episode #36: June 6, 2019

Israeli Music Today: Transcript

Today in Israeli Music, Rona Kenan sings in memory of Nechama Rivlin…Israel’s ACUM society names their Israeli song of the year…and Omer Adam releases a brand new single – or more than one. This is MyIsraeliMusic.com, where we’re building a stronger Israel, one song at a time. I’m Josh Shron, and here’s your Israeli music news for Thursday, June 6, 2019.

Mourning Nechama Rivlin

Israel is still mourning the death of its First Lady Nechama Rivlin, wife of President Reuven Rivlin, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 73. Many of the speakers at her funeral yesterday noted how Nechama Rivlin loved art, poetry, and music, so it was only fitting that music was part of the ceremony. Here’s Rona Kenan singing “Mabul” at graveside.

Nechama Rivlin was laid to rest on Har Hertzl yesterday, on the day of her 74th birthday.

Eden Hason wins “Song of the Year” at the ACUM Awards

Israel’s ACUM organization, the Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers in Israel, holds an awards ceremony each year, and it’s probably the closest thing Israel has to the Grammy awards. Doron Medali, who wrote Netta Barzilai’s “Toy”, was named Composer of the Year,” and the song of the year? SheMishehu Ya’atzor Oti by Eden Hason.

Banaia Barabi took home the award for newcomer of the year, and Rami Fortis and Barry Sacharoff won lifetime achievement awards at the ceremony.

Omer Adam releases five new singles in one day

Finally, Omer Adam is still probably the biggest star in Israeli music today, and he’s not ready to give up that title anytime soon. This morning, he released not one, but FIVE new songs to the world, just in time for beach season. Here’s a sample of one of them, a song called “Temperatura” written by, coincidentally, the aforementioned Doron Madalie.

Israeli media has been making a big deal about the fact that Omer released five songs at once, though it was just a few years ago when this practice was fairly common – only then, they called it an “album”.
